The Bluefish Run: What You Need to Know
Bluefish show up in Montauk waters when the ocean hits around 60 degrees, typically late May or early June, and they stay aggressive through September. These fish are not subtle. They're violent feeders that will smash lures, tear line, and test every ounce of gear you bring. If you're new to saltwater fishing, bluefish are the best teacher—they don't forgive mistakes, and they don't let you forget when you hook one.
The bite peaks in June and again in late August through September. Midsummer can be inconsistent; the fish move deeper during the heat, and the water gets crowded. That's when fishing charters out of Viking Fleet or Montauk Point State Park become your best bet—captains know where to find them.
Where and How to Fish Them
From shore, Second House and Ditch Pond are reliable spots in early June. By July, you'll want to fish the deeper channels around the point itself. The flats around Gardiner's Island can be excellent in June and again in late summer. Bluefish hunt in packs, so if you find one, cast back immediately—there are more.
Live bunker is the gold standard bait. Metal lures work too, especially spoons and diamond jigs, and they're faster if you're trying to cover water. Use at least 30-pound test and a wire bite leader—bluefish have teeth and they know how to use them. A 10-pound blue will shred 20-pound mono in seconds.
The Practical Reality
Don't expect to sleep in. Early morning—between 5 and 8 a.m.—is when the fishing is cleanest. By midday, especially in July, the water warms and the action slows. Evening can work, but it's crowded from June through August.
You'll lose lures. You'll lose fish. Bring extras of everything. The water in June is still cold enough to need a wetsuit if you're planning to wade; by August, it's actually swimmable, but the sun is relentless—bring sunscreen and a hat.
If you're staying for a week, plan your fishing days around the tide and the weather report. A nor'easter in July can clear out the casual tourists and concentrate the fish, but it also makes getting out difficult. Check conditions before you commit.
Local tip: Buy your bunker from Captain Mike's Marina on Star Island Road early in the morning. He opens around 5 a.m. during the season, and if he's sold out, your day is already compromised.
