October And November Peak Season At Ditch Plains

October at Ditch Plains: The Best Waves of the Year

If you time it right, October is Ditch Plains at its absolute best. The Atlantic hurricane season still has two months to run, which means swells arrive with regularity. Water temperature hovers around 60 degrees—cold enough that most people wear wetsuits, warm enough that you're not shivering on the beach. The crowds thin out after Labor Day, but serious surfers know this and come anyway. You get proper waves without the summer wall-to-wall bodies.

The sandbar at Ditch Plains shifts slightly year to year, but October's configuration tends to produce clean, organized waves that work for intermediate and advanced surfers. Storm systems tracking up the coast deliver consistent swell. Check the buoy reports before you go; October groundswell often holds for three to five days at a stretch. The best days are usually the second and third mornings after a storm passes, when conditions glass out and the wind turns offshore.

November: Power and Unpredictability

November is where Ditch Plains becomes serious business. The water drops to 50 degrees. The light dies by 4:30 p.m. Storms arrive with more violence and less warning. On good days, you get overhead waves with real shape and power. On others, the swell turns sloppy or the wind churns it to soup. Crowds remain small because casual surfers have moved on to warmer climates or put their boards away for the season.

This is also when the lineup becomes visibly more skilled. You'll see locals who've been surfing Ditch for decades, along with travelers who deliberately chase fall swell on the East Coast. If you're learning, October is more forgiving. November demands respect.

Practical Realities

Parking at Ditch remains free year-round, but the lot fills by 7 a.m. on any decent morning. Bring your own breakfast; the nearest restaurants are a five-minute drive away. The bathrooms at the beach close seasonally—confirm status before you go.

If you're new to Montauk, consider booking a surf charter or lesson to learn the breaks safely. Local instructors know the seasonal shifts and can read conditions you won't see yet.

October and November are also when you can actually find lodging without booking months ahead. Where to stay improves dramatically once summer ends.

Local tip: Bring a hood for your wetsuit by mid-November. Your neck and ears matter more than you think when water temperature drops.
